Devil’s Gate – Weber Hydroelectric Power Plant
Intersection of I-84 and US 89
A visual tour of the Devil’s Gate – Weber Hydroelectric Power Plant Historic District as it appeared in fall/winter of 2022.
Overview
With improvements and the removal of several outbuildings on the horizon, photos and videos are essential to preserving a visual history of this site. We’re grateful to Pacificorp for commissioning the project.
Devil’s Gate is a gap in the mountainside east of Ogden through which the Weber River flows. The narrow, rocky canyon was a significant obstacle for early travelers—so much so that in 1847 the Mormon pioneers chose to enter the Salt Lake Valley through Emigration Canyon instead.
History (highlights)
- Built in 1910; one of the first Utah powerplants designed to feed an electrical grid.
- The powerhouse is in Weber County; the dam is in Morgan County.
- Listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1989).
- In the 1960s, I‑84 construction buried much of the original pipeline/penstock under fill.
